Purchase Swim Splits at MSMC

Results

Newburgh, NY (Nov. 8, 2013) – The Panther swim teams traveled to Mount Saint Mary Friday and earned a split against the Knights, with the men's team capturing a 98-94 win and the women falling 116-84.

The women are now 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Skyline, while the men improved to 1-2 and 1-0 in the league.

The Purchase men and women championed the 200-yard medley relay for quick starts in Friday's matchup. Matthew Brower (FR/Staten Island, NY), who was part of the relay team, continued his strong start with an impressive win in the 1,000, winning the event. Shortly later, Andrew Latona (FR/Silver Spring, MD) took first in the 200 free. Meanwhile, Amanda Gibson (JR/Saratoga, NY) took second in the 200 individual medley, as Purchase kept pace on the women's side through the ninth event.

Sam Jaffe (FR/Silver Spring, MD) won the 200 IM and Brower returned later and won the 100 backstroke as the Panthers kept the pressure on the Knights midway through.

However, the Panther women started to lose some steam. After taking second in the 200 medley relay to open the meet, the MSMC women took the top spot in each of the first eight individual events. Knight standout Jessica Daigle took nine points in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 12:12.73. Purchase's Allison Panzironi (JR/Pine Island, NY) finished second in the event and ran a personal best.

The Mount took first through third once again in the 50-yard freestyle. MSMC freshman Allison Sciucco, freshman Amanda Bocekci and junior Danielle Rodriguez finished with times of 26.28, 27.01 and 27.62, respectively.

The Mount men did not take a top spot in the first three races of the evening, but took 14 points in the 500-yard freestyle, led by Conor Dowd with a time of 5:45.04.

Despite the comeback attempt by the hosts, Purchase's top-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke clinched the meet for the Panthers. Jaffe won the event for Purchase and sealed the win.

On the women's side, Gibson also delivered a first-place showing in the 100 breaststroke.

The swim teams return to action Wednesday at SUNY Maritime.
