Bronx, NY (Nov. 13, 2013) – The Purchase College swim teams squared off against SUNY Maritime Wednesday night on the road at the Riesenberg Hall Pool, taking home a tie and a loss in the contest against one of the league's top programs.
The Maritime men earned a 117-88 victory, despite some valiant performances from the Panthers, while the Purchase women tied the Privateers 101-101 – a first for Maritime against Purchase on the women's side.
Standout Allison Panzironi (JR/Pine Island, NY) led the Panthers. She won the 1,000-yard freestyle, capturing first in 13:04.41. Panzironi also bested the field in the 500 freestyle (6:25.87). She would complete a perfect evening with another first in the 500 freestyle, winning that event in 6:25.87.
A Maritime win in the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay, provided a seven-point swing and contributed greatly to the eventual tie. The Panthers lost that event by five-tenths of a second.
In similar fashion, Maritime also won the 200 MR on the men's side, edging Purchase time wise, 1:43.49 to 1:43.52, in the closet of margins.
But Panzironi and Matthew Brower (FR/Staten Island, NY) picked up the slack in the 1,000 events to get the Panthers back on track. Brower won the men's distance event in 10:54.53. In addition, captain Samir Mekrami (SR/Brooklyn, NY) finished fourth for Purchase.
Shortly later, Mikaela Connors (SO/Grand Island, NY) won the 200 freestyle and Andrew Latona (FR/Silver Spring, MD) narrowly lost the 200 free, taking second as both teams went back-and-forth in a very competitive Skyline Conference matchup.
Purchase's Bianca Covello (JR/Woodstock, NY) finished second in the 50 free and Dexter Brierly (JR/Brooklyn, NY) captured a first in the same event on the men's side.
Amanda Gibson (JR/Saratoga, NY), who is off to a strong start this fall for the Panthers, won the 200 individual medley. Teammate Sam Jaffe (FR/Silver Spring, MD) won the same event on the men's side.
Latona rebounded from his second-place finish earlier in the contest and won the 100 butterfly. He finished first in 57.74. Brierly would also finish first in the 100 free, capping a terrific evening in the pool and joining Panzironi as the team's top stars for the night.
Brower added a second first-place finish in the 500 free (5:18.54) and Gibson added her second in the 100 breaststroke before Jaffe capped his night with another first in the 100 breaststroke.
The Panthers set a college record in the 200 free relay, posting a time of 1:24.31. Brierly, Latona, Brower and Jaffe teamed for the standout showing in that event.
On the men's side, the Privateers used their great depth once again to steal numerous points from each event. Maritime won only four events the whole evening, led by three swimmers that were victorious twice. Junior Zach Haughn was a part of the 200 medley relay team that touched first in 1:43.19 and also won the 100 backstroke in 59.70. Tony Choi won the 200 free in 1:53.64 and was on a leg of the 200 free relay that won in 1:34.31. Collin McNamara was also a part of both relay teams that were victorious.
On the women's side, the Privateers were down by 13 points (99-86) going into the final event of the night, the 200 free relay. Maritime finished in first and second place in the event, taking 15 points, while the Panthers took only two points from third place, which meant the meet ended in a 101-101 tie.
Maritime's Hayley Hobbs and Treasa Murphy both led the Privateers with three first-place finishes apiece. The duo was a part of both relay teams, the 200 medley relay (2:05.80) and the 200 free relay (1:52.05), while Hobbs won the 100 butterfly event in 1:04.74 and Murphy won the 50 free event in 28.36.
Panther swim is back in action Friday at Lehman College in a non-conference meet.
