Box Score Purchase, NY
(Oct. 18, 2014) – A pair of second-half goals by Mount Saint Mary sealed a 3-0 decision over Purchase in a rematch of last fall's Skyline Conference Tournament Semifinal Saturday.
Host Purchase, which fell to 6-7-1 overall, including 3-2-1 in the Skyline, played well early on Senior Day for the Panthers, but the first-place and reigning conference-champion Knights pulled away over the final 45 minutes to improve to 9-4-1 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Purchase had its best scoring opportunity early in the second half when a penalty kick following a foul inside the box was saved by Knights netminder Austin Peluso.
Captain
Junior Sanguina (SR/White Plains, NY) blasted a line-drive shot on the PK, but Peluso made an athletic grab to keep the slight 1-0 margin intact.
That's when the momentum shifted toward the Knights.
Chris Marchese played the role of hero for MSMC, netting a hat trick on the afternoon. He scored the game's first goal off an assist from Mike Zanfardino in the opening period and then provided another tally off a header in the second half, which was assisted by Matt Garcia. The visitors tacked on a third goal on a second-half PK from Marchese.
The first half was evenly matched and the two teams went into the break separated by only a goal.
However, MSMC outplayed the Panthers in the second stanza, thanks largely to the offensive play of Marchese, who provided two goals following the highlight PK save by Peluso. Peluso earned the win in net and finished with eight saves.
Prior to the game, seniors
Eli Wilson-Berkowitz (SR/Northampton, MA),
Andres Romero (SR/Port Chester, NY) and Sanguina were honored on Senior Day. Surrounded by family and friends on the field, Wilson Berkowitz, Romero and Sanguina were recognized by event MC and
Sports Information Director Bobby Ciafardini, who presided over the brief ceremony. The trio received senior gifts from the coaching staff, a certificate of appreciation from the SID office and will also be honored during the program's annual awards banquet in May.
"Eli has become a valuable playmaker in his two seasons as Panther," Ciafardini said of Wilson-Berkowitz, noting his calm and cool demeanor. Wilson-Berkowitz was joined on the field by his parents and sister.
"Our next senior has shown a flash for making big plays in big moments," Ciafardini said of Romero, who was accompanied by his mom and sister. The former All-Skyline honoree is second on the team in goals.
The final introduction was saved for captain and three-year Panther Sanguina, who is coming off All-Skyline and ECAC first team honors from a year ago. "He has epitomized the leadership role of a captain and has become a staple of the Panthers ever-improving success. He currently leads the team in goals and is second in assists," Ciafardini said of Sanguina, who was joined by his mom and brother at midfield. "He will be dearly missed."
Purchase returns to action Tuesday against Sarah Lawrence.
