(Nov. 12, 2014) – Purchase swim earned a split Wednesday night at home against conference rival SUNY Maritime.
The Panther women defeated the Privateers 109-87, while the Maritime men, the conference's reigning champs, earned a 131-58 final against Purchase.
The women's team raced out to an 11-4 lead with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Maritime won the same event on the men's side and also totaled 16 points in the 1,000 behind Matthew Collins, who finished first. Christine McCormack won the 1,000 on the women's side for the visitors.
With both teams performing well early, the freestyle events loomed large with
Sam Jaffe (SO/Silver Spring, MD) winning the 200 and
Bianca Covello (SR/Woodstock, NY) also racing to a first-place finish in the 50 free. Maritime won the 50 free (first place for Collin McNamara) and then used the boost to swing some more points in the 200 IM, courtesy of a first from Sarah Soulagnet and Brendan Erskine, who both won the races.
Maritime captured firsts in the 100 butterfly events and the 100 men's freestyle behind Matt Cannon, who took the race in 55.52 for another nine points as the Privateers pulled away.
Standout newcomer
Sarah Kynast (FR/Stony Point, NY) did the same for Purchase on the women's side, earning a top finish in the 100 freestyle. She took first in 1:02.12 and helped the Panthers earn nine points of their own on the women's side.
Teammate
Lorena Peralta (FR/Bronx, NY), who swam well on the evening, took first in the 100 backstroke as the Panthers coasted the rest of the way, earning another first in the 500 freestyle thanks to
Haley Ryan (JR/East Hampton, NY) and a first in the 100 breaststroke (Covello, 1:20.16).
For Maritime, Ryan Fitzgerald and Robert Lewis earned first-place finishes for the visitors in the 100 backstroke and the 500 freestyle, respectively. Maritime finished the matchup in exhibition.
Purchase, which earned its first team win of the season on the women's side, has a quick turnaround and will host Mount Saint Mary at home Friday night and then the College of Mount Saint Vincent Monday at Purchase.
