(Nov. 1, 2014) – Sixth-seeded Purchase pulled the upset Saturday night in the Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Quarterfinals against No. 3 SUNY Maritime.
The Panthers, which fell to the Privateers by a goal in the regular season, upended Maritime on its home field 2-0 to advance to the league semifinals this coming Wednesday at No. 2 Sage. That game is slated for 12:30 p.m.
Purchase captain
Junior Sanguina had a playoff game to remember. Sanguina (SR/White Plains, NY) scored both goals – one early in the first and the other late in the second – to seal the victory. The scores were his fifth and sixth of the season.
The Panthers stormed out of the gates and recorded five shots in the first seven minutes of play. About 10 minutes later, the Panthers got on the board after a pass from the left wing towards the center of the box was corralled and sent inside the right post to put Purchase ahead 1-0.
Renato Martins (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) assisted Sanguina on the score.
Maritime was awarded a corner kick in the final four minutes of the half, but were unable to do anything with it as the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
After both teams had a chance to dry off from the rainy elements, Maritime and Purchase returned to the pitch for the final 45 minutes.
The Privateers were unable to string together any successive offensive series, as play continued to be battled in the neutral zone as well as in their own defensive end thanks largely to an impressive defensive performance from Purchase.
Anthony Iurillo (FR/Flushing, NY),
Connor Leavens (SO/Whitestone, NY),
Samvara Anello (JR/Bali, Indonesia) and
Matthew Ebel (JR/Miller Place, NY) spearheaded the defense, while keeper
Esteban Aguilar (JR/East Hampton, NY) earned the shutout win in goal.
"Matt Ebel got the start at right back and was instrumental in helping us get the shutout," Purchase head coach
James Bruno said, adding that the team had to piece together its backline lineup with injuries. "I'm very proud of Anthony, Connor, Sam, Matt and Esteban. They all did a great job."
In the 84th minute of play, Purchase collected its second goal of the match to go ahead by two with just 6:19 left to play. The second goal off the foot of Sanguina was assisted by
Andres Romero (SR/Port Chester, NY) and
Dylan Hyman (SR/San Francisco, CA), who also played very well in the second half.
"Andres was an absolute field general," Bruno said. "He got an assist on that goal, but more importantly, he was a controlling factor in the midfield. Junior and Andres were playmakers for us in a tough environment under tough conditions."
Leading Maritime was junior netminder Karl Weber, who finished the match with five saves on the evening.
Maritime ends its 2014 season with a 9-8-1 overall record, including a 5-3-1 mark in league play.
Purchase is now 8-9-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the Skyline.
