(Nov. 24, 2014) – The Purchase College men's and women's swim teams wrapped their pre-Thanksgiving break with a split at Lehman College on Monday night.
The Panthers earned a 118-87 non-conference win on the women's side, but fell 104-60 on the men's side. For Lehman, the hosts took a split in the program's home opener.
The Purchase men opened strong in a collaborative effort by taking first in the 200-medley relay. Shortly after,
Robert Ashkinos (FR/Sparkill, NY) took second the 200 free, but Lehman quickly matched the pace and, like the Panther women, looked strong early.
Panther veteran
Varun Soondar (SR/New Rochelle, NY) finished second in the 50 free and Purchase managed to keep pace until event 18, with Ashkinos adding another second-place finish in the 100 freestyle and rookie
Chisei Tomita (FR/Tokyo, Japan) winning the 100 backstroke in 1:08.39.
But Lehman was too much. The Lightning was paced by Abel Dupres, Jeremy Guerra, Enes Mernica and Anthony Preda, who were each double winners for Lehman.
Dupres earned gold in the 100 fly and the 50 free. Guerra finished first in the 200 free and 100 free, while Preda won the 200 IM and 100-breast. Mernica won two long distance races, earning gold in the 500-free and coming in first in the 1000-free with a time of 11:58.54.
The Purchase women also started strong as
Anna Krol (SR/Oceanside, NY) won the 1000 free and
Lorena Peralta (FR/Bronx, NY) captured a first in the 200 free. Fellow rookie
Sarah Kynast (FR/Stony Point, NY) edged the field in the 50 free as the Panthers raced out to a comfortable lead. Krol would later finish first in the 100 breaststroke as well.
Bianca Covello (SR/Woodstock, NY) won the 200 IM and Peralta added another first, winning the 100 free before
Haley Ryan (JR/East Hampton, NY) put the finishing touches on the win by besting the competition in the 500 free.
On the women's side, Angela Mejia and Susana Perez led Lehman, with the two winning two races apiece. They were members of the first place 200-medley relay team, along with Victoria Michalatos and Mosebopetan Oladele, as they completed the race in 2:13.33. Mejia finished first in the 100 fly, while Perez earned gold in the 100 back with a time of 1:16.42.
Up next, Purchase returns to action following the Thanksgiving holiday with two home meets next week.
