(Dec. 10, 2014) – The Purchase swim teams earned a split at Brooklyn College Wednesday night, with the women topping the hosts 110-82 and the men dropping a 105-93 decision.
The women delivered a win the 200-yard medley relay and shortly later
Lorena Peralta (FR/Bronx, NY) dusted the competition in the 200 freestyle for an early and commanding lead.
Peralta won the fifth event in 2:18.39, besting her teammate
Anna Krol (SR/Stony Point, NY) in 2:18.39 as the two combined for 13 points. Peralta also won the 500 freestyle and is quickly establishing herself as the top rookie in the conference.
In between,
Varun Soondar (SR/New Rochelle, NY) helped the Panther men by winning the 1,000 in 12:52.66. Soodar is enjoying a stellar senior campaign for Purchase and would later best the field in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly as well.
Meanwhile, star
Sam Jaffe (SO/Silver Spring, MD) continued his dominance in his individual events. He won the 200 free in 2:03.16 – another highlight for the Panthers.
The women started to separate themselves from Brooklyn with a pair of first-place finishes for
Natalie Allen (JR/Staten Island, NY) and
Bianca Covello (SR/Woodstock, NY) in the 50 free and the 200 IM, respectively. Allen also took the 100 freestyle event.
Jaffe kept the Panthers in the meet on the men's side by duplicating Allen's freestyle win in the men's event. Last season's rookie of the year also posted a first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.44) before Brooklyn capped the win with a first in the 200 freestyle relay, one that was aided by a win in the 500 freestyle as the Bulldogs edged the Panthers.
Purchase will wrap the first half of the season this Saturday at Sarah Lawrence in a tri-meet with the Gryphons and Bard College. The teams are also traveling to Florida in early January before returning from mid-winter recess and gearing up for the end of the regular season and February's conference championships, which will be hosted by SUNY Maritime.
