(Apr. 12, 2014) – Women's lacrosse played SUNY Maritime to an exciting finish on Saturday, but came up just short, falling 10-9.
On a day when Maritime senior Theresa D'Amore suited up for the last time before her beloved fans at Reinhart Field, the Maritime women's lacrosse team came through with an exhilarating victory. The win moves the Privateers to 3-8 overall on the season, including a 1-5 mark in Skyline play, while the Panthers fall to 5-4 (2-4 Skyline).
The festivities began on Saturday with a special Senior Day ceremony, honoring D'Amore for her two-season career with the Privateers, over which she has started 24 games and recorded 32 groundballs, 15 caused turnovers and eight draw controls.
Maritime quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first 10 minutes.
Then, Purchase's
LeiAnna Frazier (SR/Brooklyn, NY) found the back of the net as the Panthers got on the board.
The Privateers responded with a pair of tallies to bring the score to 5-1 with 11:57 to go in the first. The Panthers burnt their first timeout of the half and came out of it pretty strongly, using four different goal-scorers to grab the next four goals and tie the game up at 5-5.
Maritime answered by tallying three straight. Purchase's
Rebecca Small (SR/South Glastonbury, CT) ended the scoring in the opening half with a goal to bring the score back within two, 8-6, before the halftime horn sounded.
In the second half, Charlotte Acklin scored her fourth goal of the game and freshman Jillian Raimo tallied her first of the day and third of the season just over a minute later. Raimo's goal stood as the game-winner, as the Privateers held Purchase to three goals over the final 25 minutes.
In addition to Frazier and Small, who each scored twice on Saturday, Purchase's
Annette Elson (SO/Las Vegas, NV), who is having a superb season, scored a hat trick, netting three goals, while
Nathalie Lavelanet (JR/South Salem, NY) and
Hannah Harris (SR/Northampton, MA) recorded single goals. For Harris, it was her first of the season.
Maria Papp (SO/White Plains, NY) added an assist on the afternoon.
Panther keeper
Jess Lindsay (SR/Rochester, NY) finished with nine saves.
