Box Score Purchase, NY
(Sept. 13, 2014) – The Purchase College men's soccer team was dominant Saturday, but a feisty City College of New York squad made the Panthers work for the victory in an eventual 2-1 final.
Purchase (3-1-1) dropped the Beavers to 1-4 in a non-conference matchup that was slowed by some poor weather, including a chilly rain. The Panthers also played a man down from late in the first half throughout the final 45 minutes.
Nonetheless, the hosts solved the tenacious visitors thanks to an unassisted free kick from
Andres Romero (SR/Port Chester, NY), who scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 70th minute. Romero's second goal of the season handed Purchase its third win in five contests and its first since a double OT tie with YU last time out.
The Panthers scored the game's first goal behind captain
Junior Sanguina (SR/White Plains, NY). The cross from the 22 was beautifully headed into the upper right corner of the night – from a great feed by
Matthew Ebel (JR/Miller Place, NY), who recorded the assist. Sanguina's second goal of the fall got the Panthers started in the right direction.
However, about 15 minutes later (35:09), CCNY tied the contest on a score by Edward Ames. The Ames goal was double assisted by Cesar Bullon and Pablo Prieto.
The game would stay deadlocked until late in the second half, when Romero played the role of offensive hero.
Purchase outshot CCNY 23-6, including 12-1 in the first half, and also took 11 corner kicks to none for City.
Panther keeper
Esteban Aguilar (SO/East Hampton, NY) recorded his second win since returning from an early season injury. The standout notched two saves. CCNY's Maxwell Berkow took the loss, despite four saves.
Sanguina and Romero finished with seven and six shots, respectively. Sanguina played an outstanding game in the midfield, head coach
James Bruno said afterward. The captain anchored the lineup and spearheaded the victory.
Purchase will look to keep things rolling next Wednesday at home, when the Panthers welcome Centenary for another non-conference tilt.
