(Nov. 13, 2015) - The Purchase College women's swim team split Friday night at Mount Saint Mary, falling to the hosts and topping St. Joseph's College-BKLYN, while the Panther men fell to MSMC.
The MSMC women won nine of the 11 events in a pair of league wins. The Knights defeated 127-69 before swimming past conference newcomer St. Joseph's, 142-43. The Mount men opened conference action in a 114-56 win over Purchase. The Knights received a pair of individual wins each from Kyle Barber, Christopher Sagan and Sam Watson.
The Purchase women bounced back in a 125.5-61.5 win over SJC-BKLYN.
Six of 22 events saw Purchase come in to take the second-place spot. Another nine events saw the Panthers take both third and fourth. Some of these were by narrow margins, such as
Colleen Ferguson (FR/Marcellus, NY) finishing third in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.07 to MSMC's Samantha McGregor in 1:09.97. The meet ended for the women with another close second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (
Melissa Trail (SR/Pound Ridge, NY),
Haley Ryan (SR/East Hampton, NY),
Lorena Peralta (SO/Bronx, NY) and Ferguson), 1:52.18 to 1:49.22.
Other notable finishes included Trail stealing the show with another perfect meet individually. She won the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke in 25.60 and 1:02.42, respectively. Peralta collected two second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle with a 59.88 and the 200 freestyle with a 2:11.86. Coming in fourth in the 500 freestyle,
Alex Lally (JR/Sunnyvale, TX) had her best swim in years, racing a 7:05.25.
On the men's side,
Sam Jaffe (JR/Silver Spring, MD) posted two resounding firsts in the 200 IM (2:12.55) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.65) during his first competition this season.
Andrew Kaplan (SR/Cooperstown, NY) garnered two second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and
Colin Russell (SO/Pennington, NJ) sprinted his 50 and 100-yard freestyle to place second and third, respectively.
Robert Ashkinos (SO/Sparkill, NY) took a departure from his usual events to place third in the 500 freestyle.
Ryuichiro Okada (SO/Osaka, Japan), despite recovering from an illness, swam to third place in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, respectively.
The men felt the absence of distance swimmer
Carl Marsh (SR/Southampton, NY), who was at his regional cross-country championship meet, during the 1,000 freestyle. Barber was the lone competitor, finishing in 11:09.59.
"We beat a very good team of swimmers from St. Joe's by a lot, but we lost to a very strong [men's and] women's team from MSMC - likely, [one of] the best in the conference,"
head coach Peter Nestel said.
The men and women have a busy week ahead: Monday night they travel to SUNY Maritime, then prepare for their first home meet this Thursday against Lehman College. The women also face St. Joseph's College-LI on Saturday.
