(Nov. 16, 2015) - The Purchase College swim teams split at SUNY Maritime Monday night.
The Panther women scored a 110-87 victory, while the Purchase men fell 134-55 to the unbeaten Privateers at the Riesenberg Aquatic Center.
The Purchase women were led by
Colleen Ferguson (FR/Marcellus, NY), who won the 100 fly,
Lorena Peralta (SO/Bronx, NY), who captured first-place finishes in the 50 free and the 500 free, and
Melissa Trail (SR/Pound Ridge, NY), who continued her strong start to the winter campaign with another two individual firsts in the 200 free and the 100 back. Captain
Haley Ryan (SR/East Hampton, NY) was also strong, collecting a second in the 1,000 freestyle and a second in the 100 free, right behind teammate and first-place finisher
Natalie Allen (SR/Staten Island, NY). Allen turned in a nice showing of her own. She won the 100 free and also teamed for a first, along with Ferguson, Peralta and Trail in the opening 200 medley relay.
The Panther 200 medley relay A team, even while switching up its order, took first to start off the meet on a high note. Following the relay, Ryan swam to second in the 1000 in 13:54.85. Showing versatility, Ryan also later scored another second-place victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:10.37. The Panther women took firsts in six other events throughout the night. Peralta had a perfect individual meet with a pair of wins in the 50 and 500 freestyle, swimming 27.53 and 5:56.70, respectively. Other notable swims included rookie
Katherine Lopez (FR/Dix Hills, NY), who tackled two tough events in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, scoring second and third, respectively. Several swimmers tried new events, including
Jill Trazino (SO/New York, NY) in the 200 free and
Madi Smith (SO/Lagrangeville, NY) in the 100 breaststroke. Trazino finished fourth, Smith third.
The Maritime women rallied late, but the Purchase women were too strong. On the women's side for the hosts, the Privateers were led by freshman Ekaterina Aaron, who recorded her team's first win of the night in the 1,000.
Although the Panther men fell short, Purchase's standout returner and captain
Sam Jaffe (JR/Silver Spring, MD) provided some highlights in the 200 IM and the 100 free. He finished first in the 200 IM and second in the 100 free.
The men saw the return of Carl Marsh (SR/Southampton, NY), who swam two best times in the 500 and 1000 freestyle with a 6:28.94 and 13:30.05. Jaffe won the 200 IM in 2:07.73 and placed second in the 100 free. The 200 free relay team of Jaffe, Marsh, Colin Russell (SO/Pennington, NJ) and Andrew Kaplan (SR/Cooperstown, NY) scored first in 1:41.00.Maritime's men quartet of Matt Cannon, Craig Lyon, Kevin Wu and Doug Russell won the 200 medley relay.
