Purchase, NY (Dec. 12, 2015) – An exciting back-and-forth contest with visiting Sarah Lawrence finished in a split Saturday at Purchase.

SLC defeated Purchase 100-90 on the men's side, while the Panther women topped the Gryphons 109-90 in the host's final meet before the holiday break.

Both meets were decided in the latter third of the competition.

SLC opened with wins in the women's and men's 200-yard medley relays, netting an 11-4 lead following the first two events. In the next event, Devon Peal won the 1,000 freestyle for the Gryphons, but the Panthers stayed competitive early, taking second and third behind Colleen Ferguson (FR/Marcellus, NY) and Haley Ryan (SR/East Hampton, NY), respectively.

The Panther men took their first lead after the 1,000, as Carl Marsh (SR/Southampton, NY) captured a first for nine points and a 17-4 home advantage.

SLC took a 10-point lead, 31-21, on the women's side with a first in the 200 free. Hannah Lawson bested the field in the 200 free, with Purchase's Lorena Peralta (SO/Bronx, NY) touching second. The Gryphons also recaptured the lead on the men's side, with Cameron Martinez earning a first in the 200 freestyle.

Panther standout Melissa Trail (SR/Pound Ridge, NY) helped the Purchase women close back within one (36-35) in the 50 freestyle. She won the race in 25.88.

Purchase also battled back on the men's side, tying the score early at 33-33, as Sam Jaffe (JR/Silver Spring, MD) won the 50 (23.27). The Panthers then took the lead back on the men's side, courtesy of Jaffe, who won the 200 IM.

Going into event 11 – the 100 butterfly – Purchase trailed 49-41 on the women's side and led 44-41 on the men's side.

Ferguson won the 100 fly to close the gap back to three, 56-53, and then Trail tallied a win in the 100 freestyle for a 67-61 lead.

Meanwhile, Martinez earned his second first-place finish for the men in the 100 fly. But once again, Purchase bounced back in the 100 free. Andrew Kaplan (SR/Cooperstown, NY) won the event for the Panthers.

However, SLC's Anthony Lee won the 100 back for a 76-62 lead.

The Panther women began to pull away over the final six events. Trail won for the third time. She touched first in the 500 freestyle (5:24.01) for nine points. The Panthers now held a 92-73 lead.

Jack Langland won the 500 on the men's side, effectively sealing the meet for the visitors, who now led 88-68.

Jaffe, like Trail on the women's side, was once again impressive for Purchase. He capped his perfect day in the pool with a win in the 100 breaststroke. The Panthers showed their mettle in the final event as well, capturing a first in the 200 freestyle relay.

But SLC was able to hold on for the narrow win on the men's side.

After losing the 100 breaststroke, the Panther women wrapped with a win in the 200 freestyle relay to seal the victory.

Purchase will return to varsity action after the New Year.
