(March 10, 2015) – Winter snow has been a nemesis for the Purchase College women's lacrosse team, as has been the case for many spring season sports in the area, but Tuesday night it was rain that tried to slow up the Panthers.
After weeks of being kept inside by the snow and wintry mix, which bombarded the turf field, a steady downfall of rain pushed the start time up from 7 to 6:30 p.m. and also made for some very unpleasant conditions for the home and season opener tonight. Nonetheless, undeterred by the weather, the women's team posted an overwhelming 18-1 win against the visiting College of St. Elizabeth.
The non-conference matchup featured eight different Panthers reaching the scoring column, including returning All-Skyline selection
Samantha Rich (JR/Providence, RI) and newcomer
Zoe Hines (FR/Maplewood, NJ). Hines scored the game's first goal (26:05) and Rich followed shortly after before Hines and Rich connected again for a commanding 4-0 margin.
Purchase led 14-1 at the break. CSE's Ashley Morera accounted for the Eagles' only goal of the night.
The Panthers, which outshot CSE 34-6, would tack on four more goals in the second period to seal their first win of the season.
Purchase
head coach Francesca Levine was pleased with the performance and said it was great to see outdoor action with the team limited by recent weather, having to practice more indoors and navigate around some scrimmage cancellations.
The Panthers improved to 1-0, dropping CSE to 0-1 in the opener for both programs.
Purchase returns to action Saturday at Rosemont.
