Box Score Purchase, NY
(March 18, 2015) – Even on a night when the temperature outside dipped into the high 20s and felt more like the teens at Purchase, women's lacrosse managed to stay red hot to start the 2015 spring campaign, carving up a 20-4 victory against USMMA.
Purchase is now 3-0 overall. The loss dropped USMMA to 0-2.
The Panther offense was strong throughout the game, scoring 12 of their 20 goals in the first half. Their defense was also formidable, only allowing one goal in the second half.
For the Panthers, standout rookie
Zoe Hines (FR/Maplewood, NJ) had a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists, while fellow star midfielder
Samantha Rich (JR/Providence, RI) (5G, 1A) and freshman
Kelly Turtell (FR/Farmingdale, NY) (3G, 3A) both had six points.
Nathalie Lavelanet (SR/South Salem, NY) also turned in a nice performance with four goals, while newcomer
Madi Smith (FR/Lagrangeville, NY) added a pair of her own for the hosts.
Rich led all players with 12 draw controls and had three groundballs.
Daniella Martins (FR/Mahopac, NY) caused three turnovers. Goalie
Caitlin Sosa (JR/New York, NY) made four saves for the victory between the pipes.
Continuing the theme of playing well on both ends, Purchase scored 20 goals on 38 shots. The Panthers only had five turnovers on the night, while causing eight for USMMA, who had a total of 13.
USMMA was led by Sarah Milafsky, who had two goals on five shots. Elizabeth Noonan and Madeline Thibeault had the others.
Purchase scored the first four goals of the game before Noonan found the back of the net on a free position shot at 22:57 of the opening half. The Panthers advanced their lead to 9-1 before Milafsky's first goal at 16:33, also via a free position shot. The next Mariner goal also came off the stick of Milafsky, with just 25 seconds remaining in the first half and it made the score 12-3 in favor of the home squad.
Thibeault scored the first goal of the second half at 28:33, making it 12-4, but Purchase finished by scoring eight more goals the rest of the way to claim the victory.
Purchase returns to action Saturday when the Panthers welcome the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts to the campus for a 1 p.m. start.
