5-0 Lacrosse Opens League Play in Victory at OW

Rookie Hines Sets Program Record for Goals

Box Score

Uniondale, NY (March 23, 2015) – The Purchase College women's lacrosse team opened their conference schedule in the same column they've found themselves all season thus far in non-conference play.

The win column.

The Panthers, who entered Monday night 4-0 against non-league opponents, started their conference schedule in style, topping SUNY College at Old Westbury 13-11 at Mitchel Field in Uniondale. The Panthers are now 5-0 overall, atop the Skyline Conference, and 1-0 in league play. Old Westbury drops to 1-4 on the season.

Reigning Skyline Conference Player of the Week Samantha Rich (JR/Providence, RI) netted three goals and reigning Skyline Rookie of the Week Zoe Hines (FR/Maplewood, NJ) scored two more to put Purchase ahead with a 5-0 lead through the opening 10:48.

OW's Emily Powell and Courtney Gallagher tallied back-to-back goals in a 12 second span to make it a 5-2 game.

Following a Kelly Turtell (FR/Farmingdale, NY) goal, Old Westbury answered with goals by Gabriella DiPierno, Danielle Weir, Sara Bey and Powell to knot the game at 6-6 with 3:04 remaining in the first half.

Purchase added three-straight goals (two more from Hines and another from Turtell) before Powell netted her third goal of the game as time expired in the first half to make it a 9-7 contest at the break.

Purchased used a 3-0 run to open the second half (Hines, Virginia Redlon (FR/Carmel, NY) and Daniella Martins (FR/Mahopac, NY)) to grab a 12-7 lead with 14:15 remaining.

A pair of Old West goals halted Purchase's run, but Hines then totaled her sixth goal of the game at the 7:07 mark to close out Purchase's scoring with a 13-8 advantage.

Bey would dish out her third assist of the season when DiPierno ripped nylon at 6:47 to close the deficit to four goals (13-9).  Weir (1:49) and Gallagher (1:08) each scored late goals to make it a two-goal game, but it was  not enough to overcome Purchase's performance offensively.

Panther keeper Caitlin Sosa (JR/New York, NY) (5-0) made four saves to earn Purchase's win.

In the end, Purchase held the advantage in shots (30-18), shots on goals (22-15) and draw controls (16-8), while Old Westbury scooped up a 19-18 edge in ground balls.

Hines, who broke the program's record for goals in a season, finished the game with her 27th goal of the spring. She has scored 27 goals in five games. She recorded six in the contest against OW. Rich added three and Turtell scored twice in the matchup as the trio accounted for 11 of the team's 13 goals.

Women's lacrosse returns to league action Saturday against SUNY Maritime at home. It is a 1 p.m. start.
