(March 28, 2015) – No SNOW, sleet or hail can stop the Purchase College women's lacrosse team from the win column these days.
The Panthers shook off a frigid day – one where snow flurries persisted throughout – to defeat SUNY Maritime 18-9 to improve to 6-0 overall and now 2-0 in Skyline Conference play. The loss dropped Maritime to 2-4, including 0-1 in the league.
Temperatures dipped into the low 30s, but the wind chill made it feel more like it was in the teens or colder. Nonetheless, Purchase started strong and overcame the elements to remain perfect on the season.
The Panthers leapt out to a 12-2 margin at halftime. Standout
Samantha Rich (JR/Providence, RI) paced Purchase in the opening 30 minutes, scoring three first-half goals, including the first of the game. Her 18th of the season – two goals later – made it 12-1.
Rich would finish the day with five goals and now has 20 on the season. She also amassed nine draw controls and ranks among the nation's leaders in that category.
Breakout rookie
Zoe Hines (FR/Maplewood, NJ) totaled six goals on seven shots, adding two assists, five groundballs and three draw controls. Her six goals pushed her incredible total to 33 on the season. The freshman is third in the country in that statistic.
The Panthers were outscored 7-6 in the second half, but performed well and tried different roster and position variations in the period, including a change at goalie with
Cynthia Plackis (FR/East Northport, NY) seeing time in the cage. Starter
Caitlin Sosa (JR/New York, NY) started the game and played the entire first half, earning her sixth win of the spring in goal. She turned away two shots on the day. Plackis had one save in goal.
Maritime's Jane Quinn scored three of the team's nine goals to lead the way. Hannah Mutum and Leanne Lavelle added two apiece. Elizabeth Higley and Christa Chase scored the other goals.
Kelly Turtell (FR/Farmingdale, NY) also turned in an impressive showing for the Panthers. Turtell notched three goals, three assists, fired six shots and collected three groundballs and one draw control in a solid all-around performance for the hosts. Teammate
Madi Smith (FR/Lagrangeville, NY) recorded two goals and one assist and
Virginia Redlon (FR/Carmel, NY) added the other goal in the win.
The Panthers were dominant statistical. Purchase won the battle for groundballs (23-14), draw controls (17-8) and also forced more turnovers as Maritime finished with 14, while Purchase had 11 on the afternoon.
The Panthers will look to keep their regular-season record perfect Monday, as they welcome Albertus Magnus for a non-conference matchup on Spring Break. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
