(Jan. 22, 2016) – Senior Night 2016 was a win in and out of the pool.
Purchase
head coach Peter Nestel honored his team's six seniors in the final regular-season swim meet of the winter Friday night at home – a victory for the Panthers on both the men's and women's side. The Panthers defeated the College of Mount Saint Vincent 92-40 on the men's side and 118-55 on the women's side, ending the evening in exhibition.
During the first break of the night, Nestel delivered a terrific speech for each of the six seniors –
Carl Marsh (SR/Southampton, NY),
Andrew Kaplan (SR/Cooperstown, NY),
Natalie Allen (SR/Staten Island, NY),
Kristina Moucha (SR/Montauk, NY),
Melissa Trail (SR/Pound Ridge, NY) and
Haley Ryan (SR/East Hampton, NY). Standout
Lorena Peralta (SO/Bronx, NY) presented each of the seniors with a gift bag, which included a certificate of appreciation and other tokens of appreciation for their dedication to the program. The six will be honored again during Purchase's year-end awards banquet.
By that point in the meet, Purchase was already well in the lead. The Panthers won both opening relays for an 11-4 margin after two events.
Colleen Ferguson (FR/Marcellus, NY) kept things going with a first in the 1,000, as did Marsh. Peralta took the 200 freestyle;
Ryuichiro Okada (SO/Osaka, Japan) won the 100 butterfly; Trail captured a first in the 100 free; and Kaplan bested the field in the 100 free, too.
CMSV's Erin Maloney won the 100 back, but the Panthers were just too strong as Okada earned his second first in the 100 back, Ferguson added a second of her own in the 500 free, which Marsh duplicated on the men's side before Allen earned a first in the 100 breast, which forced exhibition in events 20-22.
The Panthers, fresh off their training trip in Puerto Rico, looked strong in the last swim meet before next weekend's championships at SUNY Maritime. The men finished the regular season at 2-3 in the league, while the women finish with a 6-1 conference record.
