(Nov. 15, 2016) – Both Panther swim teams traveled across the Tappan Zee Tuesday night to face the non-conference Pioneers at William Paterson University.
The women held their own, but fell just short in a 107-80 loss. On the men's side, Purchase lost 102-34.
Showing depth early on, the Purchase women captured second and third place spots in the 200-yard medley relay: Second behind captain
Lorena Peralta (JR/Bronx, NY),
Madi Smith (JR/Lagrangeville, NY),
Rachel Parker (SR/Glen Head, NY) and
Kelsey Straub (SR/White Plains, NY), and third behind
Katherine Lopez (SO/Dix Hills, NY),
Nicole Brennan (SO/Cochecton, NY),
Jill Trazino (JR/New York, NY) and
Hayley Restivo (JR/Jamestown, NY), respectively.
Following the relay, captain
Colleen Ferguson (SO/Marcellus, NY) took second in the 1,000 free with a season's best time of 12:26.52. Peralta then won the 200 free in 2:12.66. Restivo took fourth in that same race with a season's best swim of 2:40.09.
The Panther women again illustrated depth in the 200 IM, taking third and fourth behind Lopez and Straub, respectively.
Junior powerhouse Parker took first in both of her individual events, the 50 free in 26.39 and the 100 fly in a season's best swim of 1:04.88. Peralta swam to second place in the 100 back with a season's best time of 1:09.38.
The women finished off their night with an eleven-point first in the 200 freestyle relay, behind Parker, Peralta, Ferguson and Smith in a season's best 1:51.32.
On the men's side, in his season debut of the 1,000 free,
Sebastian Checchi (JR/New Rochelle, NY) took first in the event with a time of 11:50.30.
Also swimming a new event,
James Young (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) took fifth in the 200 free (2:28.77). Young later swam a season's best 100 free in 1:04.66.
Other notable swims include a season's best 50 free for
Jared Waters (SR/Bayside, NY) in 34.86, and a third-place finish for Checchi in the 100 free (57.01).
Daniel Demopolous showed improvement throughout the meet, taking third in the 200 free with a season's best swim in 2:04.76, then swimming another season's best in the 100 fly with a fourth-place finish in 1:04.59.
The women now hold a 3-4 overall record, 2-2 in the conference, and the men hold a 1-5 record, 1-2 in the conference.
Purchase swim will return to action this Saturday afternoon, facing non-conference Lehman College in the Bronx.
