Results

Bronx, NY (Nov. 19, 2016) – Against non-conference rivals in the Bronx, Purchase men's and women's swim teams battled to close finishes on both sides. The women lost 111.5-86.5, and the men fell short at 128.5-85.5.

Despite the final score, the Panther men and women had strong showings, winning 11 of the 23 events against the Lightning Saturday afternoon.

Captain Colleen Ferguson (SO/Marcellus, NY) started off the individual events with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle. This was followed by a win from standout Sebastian Checchi (JR/New Rochelle, NY) in the same event for the men, with a time of 11:54.52. Junior captain Lorena Peralta (JR/Bronx, NY) kept the momentum going with a win in the 200 free (2:12.96).

Kelsey Straub (SR/White Plains, NY) and Nicole Brennan (SO/Cochecton, NY) sprinted to third and fourth-place finishes, respectively, in the 50 free, with Checchi taking second in the men's event. Just before the first diving break, Sam Jaffe (SR/Silver Spring, MD) won the 200 IM (2:21.92) to add another nine points to the men's score.

The meet continued with more success for the women: Ferguson and Straub took first and second in the 100 fly, respectively, and Katherine Lopez (SO/Dix Hills, NY) won the 100 back in 1:15.96. Jaffe added more points for the men with a first in the 100 back as well.

Ferguson and Checchi both finished off their swims with wins in the 500 free. Hayley Restivo (JR/Jamestown, NY) took second in the distance race (7:03.30) her first time swimming it, and Robert Olejarz (JR/Brooklyn, NY) swam a new personal best of 6:57.15, taking third.

To finish off the meet, Straub added second-place points in the 100 breast (1:24.22) and Jaffe captured his third win of the afternoon in the same event (1:10.63).

The women now hold a 3-5 overall record and the men hold a 1-6 record.

The Panther women will return to conference action after the Thanksgiving holiday, at home on Nov. 29 against Mount Saint Vincent. The men, alongside the women, will swim conference rival SUNY Old Westbury at home on Dec. 6.
