(Dec. 10, 2016) – In their final meet of the fall semester, the Purchase men's and women's swim teams traveled to Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday afternoon for a double dual against the Gryphons and recent conference add, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
SLC defeated the Panther women 129-67 and the Panther men 101-66, while USMMA earned a 130-60 victory on the women's side against Purchase and a 119-42 final on the men's side. USMMA also bested SLC in both men's and women's competition, earning a 104-90 win on the women's side and a 119-58 decision on the men's side.
The meet began with a third-place finish from the 200-yard medley relay team of
Lorena Peralta (JR/Bronx, NY),
Kelsey Straub (SR/White Plains, NY),
Katherine Lopez (SO/Dix Hills, NY) and
Madison Smith (JR/Lagrangeville, NY), followed by
Jill Trazino (JR/New York, NY) racking up fourth-place points in the 1,000 freestyle.
Before the first break, the team saw another pair of third-place finishes from Peralta in the 200 free (2:12.25) and
Rachel Parker (JR/Glen Head NY) in the 50 free (26.92).
After the break, Parker took one of the three second-place finishes of the day in the 100 butterfly, touching in 1:04.80, and leaving Sarah Lawrence's third-place finisher Gabby Risica six seconds behind her.
Other notable swims from the women include Peralta's 100 free, with the captain finishing second in 59.46. Lopez took fourth in the 500 (6:37.93), and Smith and Straub took fifth and sixth in the 100 breast, respectively. The women's meet finished off with a fourth-place finish in the 200 free relay, from the squad of Trazino,
Hayley Restivo (JR/Jamestown, NY),
Nicole Brennan (SO/Cocheton, NY) and
Kristen O'Reilly (JR/Riverdale, NY).
Standouts among the men included the versatility of
Sebastian Checchi (JR/New Rochelle, NY), touching third in both the 1,000 free (12:05.47) and 100 free (56.32). He also took second in the 500, finishing in 5:46.18.
Daniel Demopoulos (JR/White Plains, NY) swam a new personal best 100 fly, touching second in 1:03.74, with his third-place Gryphon competitor Nick Ransom coming in almost 10 seconds behind him.
James Young (JR/Greenlawn, NY) swam his fastest 100 breaststroke, coming in third at 1:25.76.
Other contributions include a fifth-place finish from
Jared Waters (SR/Bayside, NY) in the 200 free, a third-place finish from
Robert Olejarz (JR/Brooklyn, NY) in the 100 backstroke (1:22.43), and a fourth place from
Corry Loveday (SR/Cropseyeville, NY) in the 100 breast. The men wrapped up their meet in exhibition with the 200 free relay.
The women now hold a 5-7 overall record and the men are 2-8.
With one dual meet left in the season before championships, the Panther swim teams head home for the holidays, returning to varsity action against non-conference Brooklyn College on Jan. 19.
