(Jan. 19, 2017) – Finishing up an intense winter training session, with a week to go until championships, the Panther swim teams traveled to non-conference Brooklyn College Thursday night for their final dual meet of the season.
Despite the nine-point advantage gained by the Bulldogs on the women's side during diving, the Panther women topped Brooklyn, 109-94. In the non-conference meet, they finish out the regular season with a 3-3 conference record, 4-6 overall. The men swam to a 102-34 loss, bringing their regular season to a close with a 2-3 Skyline record, 2-7 overall.
Five of the 13 women's events saw Panthers touching first, three of those events seeing Purchase in both first and second.
The women started off their night with a win from the 200-yard medley relay team of captain
Lorena Peralta (JR/Bronx, NY),
Katherine Lopez (SO/Dix Hills, NY),
Brigid Mckenna (JR/Tappan, NY) and
Rachel Parker (JR/Glen Head, NY) in 2:10.91.
From there, the Panthers touched first, second and third in the 1,000 freestyle, behind captain
Colleen Ferguson (SO/Marcellus, NY),
Jill Trazino (JR/New York, NY) and
Hayley Restivo (JR/Jamestown, NY), respectively.
Parker added another first in the 200 free, with a season's best swim of 2:12.91. Peralta was close behind to take second in 2:12.95. The junior standouts continued to lead their team to victory throughout the meet: Parker won the 100 butterfly in a season's best 1:04.11, and Peralta swam to first in the 100 backstroke (1:11.44).
Other notable swims from the women included a win for
Kelsey Straub (SR/White Plains, NY) in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.48), as well as second-place finishes for
Madi Smith (JR/Lagrangeville, NY) in the 50 freestyle and Lopez in the 200 IM.
McKenna, returning from a rotator cuff injury to finish out the season with the women's squad, swam to a third-place finish and new personal best time of 1:05.80 in the 100 free. She also placed third in the 500 free, her first time swimming the distance event (6:46.20).
On the men's side,
Robert Olejarz (JR/Brooklyn, NY) bested his own 200 free time by over six seconds, placing fourth in 2:36.18. He also added second-place points in the 200 IM (2:53.73) and a first in the 100 back (1:23.18).
In the men's 100 free, rookie standout
James Young (JR/Greenlawn, NY) posted a new personal best of 1:02.99, swimming to fourth place with teammate
Corry Loveday (SR/Cropseyeville, NY) behind him in fifth (1:12.69). Young and Loveday then touched first and second in the 100 breast, in 1:25.11 and 1:28.16, respectively.
The Panther swim teams return to action on Jan. 27-28, at home, where Purchase College will host the league's annual Skyline Conference swimming championship meet. Going into championships, both the men and women hold fifth-place in the standings.
