Box Score DOVER, Del. - The Purchase College men's lacrosse earned a victory over Wesley College, 5-2, in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon.
To begin the contest, the Wolverines of Wesley (1-6) scored within two minutes via a man-up strike. Over the next ten minutes, things remained 1-0 until
Christian Ishoo (FR/Tarrytown, NY) found the back of the net on a feed from
Dylan Gethicker (SR/Lime Lake, NY).
From that point on, Purchase took control and cruised the rest of the way. Gethicker scored on assist from
Ben Erkan (SO/Bellport, NY) midway through the second quarter, giving the Panthers the lead for good. Minutes later, Erkan scored an unassisted goal, as Purchase entered halftime up 3-1.
A pair of goals within the opening ten minutes of the second half further extended the advantage for Purchase, as Ishoo and
Dan Ohrem (JR/Ridgefield, CT) added the strikes.
While the offense did enough for the Panthers to grab the lead, it was the defense that held onto it and earned the win. After Wesley scored the early goal in the first quarter, the hosts were held scoreless over the next 42+ minutes of the game. Wesley finally broke that stretch towards the end of the third quarter, making it 5-2 after 45 minutes played.
However, the defense for Purchase held firm once more in the final quarter, as the Panthers left Wesley with the win.
In terms of shots, turnovers and ground balls, the two squads were nearly identical. Purchase did enjoy major advantages on clears (80 percent to 63 percent) and face offs, as
Joseph Ely (FR/North Salem, NY) won 10-of-11 on the day.
Matt Sayegh (JR/Hopewell Junction, NY) finished with nine saves for the Panthers, while Dylan Sicca (SO/Jessup, MD) collected 13 saves for Wesley.
Up next for Purchase is a home matchup with SUNY Cobleskill. That game is set to start at 1 p.m. on March 30th and you can follow it here.
